More than 1,000 people were killed during a fire festival in Iran
Iranian media reported on March 17 that at least 3 people were killed and more than 1,000 injured as many people jumped on fire and fired fireworks during the annual fire festival on the eve of the Iranian New Year.
Pirhossein Koulivand, head of Iran's national emergency agency, said of the 1,030 injured, 87 lost one lice from homemade fireworks and explosives.
Mr. Koulivand said three people were killed during a ceremony that started from March 16 (local time) that lasted through the night of the same day. Three deaths were recorded in the capital Tehran, in the provinces of Markazi and in Alborz.
According to Mr. Koulivand, of the injured, 200 were hospitalized.
According to Reuters, many people ignore the authorities' warnings about the ban on gathering in the Middle East country most affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. The semi-official news agency Fars reported that police had also arrested 25 "rule breakers" in the capital, Tehran.
Chaharshanbe Suri Fire Festival (Red Wednesday) is held on the eve of the last Wednesday of the Iranian calendar.
Every year hundreds of people are injured during the Chaharshanbeh Suri festival due to fireworks.
