Hail in China, killing 21 marathon runners and injuring many more on May 23
Running 100km in China: 21 people died because of bad weather.
Due to heavy rain and strong winds, 21 people died and many others were injured while participating in a 100km marathon in Gansu province, China. The race starts on May 22.
Speaking at a press conference in Baiyin city, Gansu province on the morning of May 23, local officials confirmed that at least 20 people had died, eight were injured and one was missing while participating in a 100km marathon. in this province, as of 8:00 a.m. Beijing time.
The run started from the morning of May 22 at the Yellow River Rock Forest Geopark - a famous tourist destination under the management of Baiyin city. A total of 172 people took part in the race and 151 were confirmed safe. Others are being treated for injuries.
Authorities said hail, ice rain and strong winds hit the mountainous area where the participants ran, causing the temperature to drop suddenly at noon on May 22.
According to Xinhua, the participants had some physical problems and their body temperature dropped suddenly because of the inclement weather.
The run was later postponed and several people went missing.
Baiyin city president Zhang Xuchen said the government sent more than 1,200 rescue workers to search. Baiyin city officials said rescue work was more difficult because of the severe weather causing landslides.
Mayor Zhang confirmed that the city government had set up a special team to conduct a deeper investigation into the incident.
